RAILWAYMEN'S DEMANDS.
MINISTER IN REPLY. By Telegraph.—Pros Asiaci&tioa. Wellington Feb. 6. Mr Herries' letter to the locomotive men state that he has also to meet the Amalgamated Society of Railway Servants and the Railway Officers' Institute this month, and therefore he cannot give the locomotive men any definite promise as to the extent their claims will be met until he can—discuss the whole question affecting the department. Tiie locomotive men are only 10 per cent of the service, and the claims of the other i) 0 per cent, cannot be prejudiced by assenting off-hand .o the demands of the locomotive men. The requests of all branches involved an increase of several hundred thousand annually, which means a permanent increase in railway rates or fares or in taxationVery cafeful consideraton a therefore required and the cost must be calculated so that no one section of railway servants shall ba given priority of treatment. The Minister says he is in full sympathy with the reasonable aspirations of railwaymen, and as soon as a fair and comprehensive scheme can be prenared he will be willing to bring it before the House, the scheme to become operative as from April 1-
