OPUNAKE.
(From Our Own Correspondent). We have now a doctor settled in our town. Dr. Metcalfe Sharpe. There was a likelihood of the doctor riot residing here any length of but'the Town Board interviewed him, promised the support of the community, and expressed a hope that he would not "move on." This had the effect of persuading the doctor to consider the needs of the district, and making his residence here for at least some months. Mr. Andrew Clarke, our well-known and popular tailor, was taken seriously ill from hemorrhage. On Wednesday he was taken to the New' Plymouth Hospital. We all hope he will pull through quickly. There was more than usual interest taken in the County Council election for chairman, due, perhaps, more to no particular member showing especial qualification, and to the unusual number of new members elected,' but when, (ho election took place there was only one man in the race—Cr. Wright. ' Tile opinion Is the member selected is the best man available.
At the Council meeting Mr. Julian's tender for metal for approaches to Waitototara bridge.was accepted. Dog fees for the year were'made the same as last year. The engineer is to consult witu Mr. Robinson, Stratford, who drew the plans for the iPunehu bridge, and expedite the work so as to jbtain the Government subsidy. The Opunake Musical Society is givinj a concert in aid of Red Cross funds. "
