The Minister for Public Works, following up a promise made by Mm some time ago, is arranging to make an extensive tour of the Dominion for the purpose of consulting local bodies with regard to the relative urgency of works in their districts. Probably the Hon. W. Fraser will devote the best part of two inoiit'lis to his task, and he will try during that time to cover the whole country and ascertain from the members of local bodies lrow they think the money available for roads, bridges, etc., should be expended during the next year or two. The great majority of local bodies are asking for public grants fa.r in excess of the funds at the disposal of the Minister for their particular districts. A selection lias been made from among the works for which grants are asked, and the Minister wishes to assure himself that the money will be .ipent in t'be directions approved by the majority .of the people most directly concerned, and in a manner that will give the largest possible amount of benefit to the districts.
