DISTRICT NEWS.
Tap,ata (From Our Own Correspondent.) There was a large attendance at the Tarata hall on Thursday last on the occasion of the concert, sale of work, ami a dance in aid of the Wounded Soldiers' Fund. During the evening a NewZealand ensign. presented to the Tarata Patriotic Society, was unfurled by Mr. Newton King. The flag was nresenw-d ly Mr. .T. Blackburne and Mr. 10. .1. Ihle. Tlio following names were inscribed on the flag:—-P. Chapman, 1). Paterson, T. Kay, R. Smith, XV. Smith, J. Whitaker, S. Keating. .1. Hart, S. Blackburne, P., Moratti, .7. Barlcv, Ktu, L. Moir, F. Fouy gere. L. Fougerc, .T. Smith, C. Guildford, G. Taylor, A. Taylor, J. Burr and G. Burr, men who have volunteer. ,1 for the front from the Tarata district. The fag is to remain in the Tarata hall. Mr K. J. Tble is chairman of the committee, Mr. <'. Smith treasurer, and Mr. F. J. Eggleton secretary. The committee. is a large one, and nearly every family in the Tarata-Pukeho districts are represented on it. The district was canvassed for subscriptions and gifts by Miss C. Paterson, Mr. H. Neilson, Mr. G. Smith, Mr. A. Corkill and E. .1. Tble, and the settlers gave, liberally. The following did good work with tin; raffle lists: —Mr. M. King. Miss M. Mackie, Mr. H. Sander, Mr. 11. Neilson, Mr. J. Blackburne anrt Mr. J. Simmons. The function has already been reported in your columns, so I will add but a few notes. During die evening instrumental selections were given by Mr. Cnreen's orchestra, and songs by Mrs. J. Drummoiid, Miss Mackie, Messrs. D. Paterson, H. C. Fenton, J. Sutherland, Mr. Rae and a sailor's hornpipe by F. J. Eggleton.
The rafTlr- resulted in Mr. W. G. Ladbrook winning the first prize (two hams) and Miss A. E. Hamerton the second (a eiishion). The first number (12), was drawn by Miss Myrtle Guildford, and the second (2111) by Miss Mary Stuart. At the auction of gifts the bidding was very quick, and over £3O was realised. r lhe workers at the hall, which was very nicely decorated, were:—Lollie stall, Miss Maggie Paterson, Grace and Edna Ible; brail tub, Miss M. "Mackie; doll guessing, Mary Stuart and Elie Pile; cake guessing, Miss Maekio, Messrs. Blackburne, Pope and D. Paterson; button Boles, Miss Myrtle Guildford, while Mr. J. Simmons, Mr. Pope and Mr. M. Martin gave valuable aid at the auction sale. Miss C. Paterson acted as auctioneer's clerk.'
The cake donated by Mr. Young, Mayor of Inglewood. was won by Mrs. Baxter and Albert Ible, both guessing the correct weight (Rilbs). Mrs. Baxter won the doll guessing competition, guessing the correct name, Joan. Hewitt, manager of the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile, Stratford, very kindly sold the stock donated at the last Tarata sale, the amount received being £22 12s. The Tarata Dog Trial Club also donated £2O. Many thanks to them.
The music foi the dance was supplied by Mr. Coreen's orchestra (Mrs. iVie violin, Mr. Corcen, senr., cornet, and Mr. Coren, junr., piano). The inusic was a rial treat. Mr. J. IJjiummond made an efficient M.C.
The takings amounted to '£lo3, and no doubt wit! reach £20,0 before the affair is wound up —surely a very creditable achievement for a place the size of Tarata. Miss H. Guildford made all arrangements for the concert programme and flag carrying. The arrangements could not have been in more capable hands.
