QUEEN MARY HOSPITAL.
OPENED AT HANMEH. By Telegraph.—Press Association;. Christchurch, June 2. About two hundred people went thil morning to Culverden, en route to Henmer, to take part in the opening of tf riew sanatorium for invalided soldiers.. From Culverden a fleet of 42 motor-cars conveyed the party, which was a very representative one, to Hanmer, where they arrived at 2.15. Hon. G. W. Russell declared the hospital open, and it over to the' charge of Colonel A.' E. Loach and Surgeon-Captain Hendry. He especially thanked Mr. and Mrs. D. Rutherford and the people of the district for the splendid work they had done for wounded and sick soldiers. It was felt that a large institution was necessary to accommodate the expected rush at the end of the war, and therefore this fine institution had been built. It would last for many years as an expression of sympathy of the people of New Zealand for our soldiers, and when it was bo longer needed for the military purposes it 'would be linked up with the public hospital systom, for the patients from civil hospitals of the South Island. Mr. .Russell said he held permission to call the hospital the "Queen Mary Hospital." The two wards would be called the "Kitchener" and "Joffre" wards, and the dining-hall had been named after Nurse Cavell, and would be known as the ".Nurse Cavell" ward.
