FOLDING'S RECRUITING SUCCESS.
(From Our Own Correspondent.)
Wclington, May 2. The Fcildiif: Recruiting Committee has completed its work under the Government scheme. It has made the personal canvass, cheeked and amended the roll of men of military age, and tabulated the results. These are of general interest, as throwing light upon the position of recruiting in a typical country district of the North IslancT. The district has sent away about COO men, and has no fewer than 900 men of military age remaining. The number of single men without dependents on the list of those who have not yet volunteered is about 40. The district lias sent more than a fair proportion of men, its quota lip to the present time being approximately 440.
The figures suggest several important questions. How soon will the married men be required under the conscription law? The reserve of fit single men over the country as a whole probably is not a,s large as some people believe it to be. Then how is the Government, under a scheme of conscription, going to meet the case of a district which has sent already more than its quota of men? There are districts which have sent less than their quotas up to the present time, and they have'larger reserves of single, men that the areas which have responded liberally to the call. If this fact is not taken into account married men will be drawn from some districts while other districts have still single men in hand
