FITZROY POST OFFICE.
STATEMENT BY POSTMASTERGENERAL. In connection with the closing of the Fust Office at Fitzroy, Mr. H. Okey, M.P., lias received the following telegram from the Postmaster-General (Sir Joseph Ward): "I foresaw 'that trouble would happen in closing the Post Office in a suburb like Fitzroy. I wag told that no one, could be found to take the office in succession to Mr. Taylor, which can hardly be accepted without' reserve in respect of so popular a suburb. I have made every effort to keep the office •pen, short of complying with the extravagant demand for salary. If Mr. Taylor will keep the office on I am quite willing to continue to pay him the salary of £56, but I can by no means agree to accede to the demands for a salary of £72, as there is absolutely nething to justify it. I shall be very glad of your help in procuring the reopening of the office."
