ANZAC DAY.

CELEBRATION IN NEW PLYMOUTH. The anniversary of the landing of the New Zealand and Australian troops on Gallipoli falls on Tuesday, April 25 and the day will be known as "Anzac Day." The question of suitably observing the occasion was referred to by the Mayor (Mr. C. H. Burgess), at the meeting of the Borough Council last night. He read a communication from the Government, asking the public to observe a halfholiday on the day, and suggesting that commemoration services should bo held. The letter suggested that the day should not be celebrated by sports or similar entertainments, but it might be used for recruiting purposes. The Mayor thought tt would be appropriate if church' services and a church parade were held. Cr. W. A. Collis thought the service should be a united one, a service to be held by all denominations in some convenient public place. Cr. A. H. Johnstone agreed with this idea. The day, he said, was a national one in which everyone was concerned, and. he thought a united open-air service would be largely attended. It was decided to request the people of New Plymouth to observe a halfholiday from 1 p.m. ' A committee, comprising Crs. A. H. Johnstone, E. Griffiths, F. E. Wilson, and W. A. Collis was appointed to make arrangements for suitably celebrating the day. In connection with Anzac Day, the Mayoress (Mrs. C. H. Biirgesß), has booked the Theatre Royal for the evening, and she will organise a patriotic entertainment.
