RUSSIA'S TASK.

VIOLENT FIGHTING. NEAR ROUMANIAN FRONTIER. London, Jan. 13. Berlin messages, via Amsterdam, state that the lighting in Bukovina is again very violent. ' The Russian attacks on the Rarancze heights, near Czernowitz, were particularly terrible. Desperate hand-to-hand fighting lasted fov hours. Most of the infantry fighting occurs at night, the artillery prevailing in the daytime.

To-day's French wireless message says there is much Russian infantry activity on the Volhynian front and in East Galicia. Strong detachments attacked the Austrian line 3 in the Tarnopol region, and there was violent fighting on the Bessa'rabian frontier.

The German official report merely remarks that advances by Russian patrols at several points of the front were repulsed.

In view of Roumania's future policy, which is daily causing increased activity, the German press attaches importance to the news that railway communication between Russia and Roiunania, is interrupted, owing to the movement' of troops in .Bessarabia, where only troop trains are moving.

The view is taken in some quarters in London that to-day's news marks the opening of a new phase in the Balkans.
