IN THE WEST.
BELGIUM DETERMINED. A FIGHT TO THE DEATH. Times and Sydney Sun Services. Received Feb. 14, 5.5 p.m. London, Feb. 13. M. Renkin, the Belgian Colonial Minister, was entertained at luncheon in London, Mr. Bonar Law presiding. M. jienkin declared that Belgium had not listened to the timorous voices that were echoing the German promptings tu'ging the surrender of tho Congo territory because Belgium was unable to develop it. The proposal to hand over the Congo to a chartered company was intolerable. Belgium did riot wish to diminish her opportunities in? the world, but fondly hoped for expansion. Belgium will never abandon the least portion of her rights, and will never surrender an inch of her territory, and' she intends to be faithful to her sacrificed heroes.
GENERAL ACTIVITY. ] \ i'iSIT AXD GERMAN REPORTS. VSEMY CLAIM GOOD RESULTS. Received Feb. 14, 8.25 p.m. I-nndon, Feb. 13. General Sir Douglas Hiug reports that there ha s been considerable artillery and aerial activity on both sides about Authville, the Hohenzollern redoubt, Guinchy, Armentieres, north of Hooge, and Ypre's. Amsterdam, Feb. 13. A German communique states that strong reconnoitring forces penetrated the enemy trenches and caused effective explosions, south-east of Boesinghe. The British during the last two days have shelled Lille with good material result. Wo did not suffer loss or military damage. In the fighting in the Vimy district on the 9th we captured 682 men and 35 machine-guns. We stormed 700 metres of. trenches south of St. Marieapy, in the Champagne district, capturing 206 men.
