DISTRICT NEWS.
TE KIM. (From Our Own Correspondent.) THE LATE FLOOD. Tt is only now that farmers and others can estimate their losses over the Jate flood, the result of the heavv rain on Friday la<rt. ' Evidence* of the severity of the rain are still met with in the wash-outs on,the roads, and the piled-up debris on the river banks. Perhaps the worst to suffer was Mr. W. C. Clement, our local sawmiller, who had no less than four bridges washed away on his bush tram, including the big, bridges over the Wairau, Maungahini, and Taungatara rivers, some of the timbers in this latter bridge being carried miles down the river. Both the foot-bridge and the traffic bridge on the Kiri Road were swept away, and a large wliare at the Opunake Sawmilling Company's mill was swept into the bush. Mr. Fred Watson's dam was carried away and his milking plant seriously damaged. Mr. C. Woodford lost a large number of fine pigs, and part of Mr. J. Tynan's orchard disappeared down stream. Mr. McLennan's I milking plant is also rendered useless for a time, at least. Flooded culverts and wash-outs on the road have kept Mr. M. Corrigan and his gang very busy and taken all round, the losses amount I to some hundreds of pounds. j
PERSONAL. Mr. E. Cain, our genial postmaster and storekeeper, who has left here to serve his country, has disposed of his business to Mr. A. W. Holder, for manyyears associated with Messrs Parke's and Brooker, and afterwards with Mr. W. C. Clement. WEDDING.The monotony of our usually quiet district was relieved by a popular wedding last Wednesday, the contracting parties being Mr. M. Marriner and Miss Ainie Lauder, both of North Auckland. The wedding took place in Te Kiri eluirch, the Rev. O. M. Stent officiating. Mr. G. Tindle acted as best man, and Miss M. Tindle bridesmaid. The wedding breakfast was held at Mr. John Harrison's house, and a large number of friends partook of the many good thngs provided by Mrs. Harrison (the bridegroom's sister). After the loyal toast of "The King," proposed by Mr. Harrison, was honored, the toast of "The Bride and Bridegroom" was proposed by Mr. Stent in a happy speech, and was warmly responded to by Mr. Marriner. Other toasts of "Our Host and Hostess," "Our Local Soldiers," coupled with the names of Messrs Tom Coupe and Otarence Bell, "Absent Friends," and "Our Genial Pastor and Knot-tier, Mr. Stent," were duly honored. In the evening, a large number of friends indulged in a danee, where fun was plentiful and songs and recitations made a pleasant evening pass all too soon. Mr. F. Tindle kindly officiated at the piano, and Mr. Harrison acted as M.C.
