In the Assembly, the Hotel Early Closing Hours Bill was read a second time. Brisbane, Oct. 29. In the Assembly, Mr. Ryan gave notice of a BUI for the abolition of the Legislative Council.
THE MELBOURNE TRAGEDY. Perth, Oct. 29. Greenwood left letters stating that Miss Williams decided to marry him, and that he .had gone to Melbourne for that purpose. Miss Williams was supposed to be in possession of £7O from the sale of property, but none was found on the bodies. It is surmised that Greenwood speculated at the races and lost.
AUSTRALIAN COUNTRY PRESS. Sydney, Oct. 29. The Country Press Conference turned down a conscription motion in favor of an amendment pledging itself to assist the Imperial and Federal Governments in any steps necessary for the successful prosecution of the war. Mr. Holman paid a tribute to the press for its attitude on the war, adding that much that had been done was due to the calm atmosphere created by the leaders of the press.
THE COAT* LUMPERS' STRIKE. Sydney, Oct. 2i). A mass meeting of coal lumpers accepted the proprietor's oiler at the conference and will resume work to-morrow. Melbourne, Oct. 29. Mr. Jensen has appealed to the coal lumpers not to interfere with and delay transports. He trusted the union concerned would not drive him to take (he matter into his own hands.
