NURSES ON SERVICE.

WHAT NEW ZEALAND HAS DONE. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, Sept. C. Up to date 183 registered New Zealand nurses have been sent to the front. Of these, twelve are in the service of the Australian authorities in Egypt, and four in Samoa. The number of nurses on the State registered roll is 1800, but some of these have since married, while others are dead. In several instances nurses have paid their own passages to England and Egypt rather than'await the doubtful chance of being sent away by the New Zealand Government. The authorities at Home have so far been only too glad to have the services of New Zealand registered nurses, and those who have gone there have been distributed among the various military hospitals in England, on the Continent, and elsewhere. So far about GOO applications have been received from registered nurses who are desirous of going to the front, and official inquiries from the matrons of the various hospitals show that about 300 are available without causing any serious inconvenience as far as local requirements are concerned. The policy ha 3 been adopted of sending three registered nurses on each transport leaving Now Zealand. This enables any nurses already at the front to be granted furlough in the case of a breakdown, or indisposition, their places being taken by the latest arrivals. The three nurses to leave on the next transport will be Matron Agnes Kate Stephenson (Te Waikato Sanatorium), who will be in charge; nurse Mary Affleck (ChristChurch Hospital), and Nurse Margaret Boyd (Wellington Hospital). Both Nurse Affleck and Nurse Boyd have been nursing at Trentham Camp.
