MOTOR SERVICE CORPS.
- «> FOR NEW ZEALAND ARMY. NEW BRANCH DECIDED ON. New regulations have been drawn up and approved by the Defence authorities, providing for the establishment of a motor service, corps in New Zealand, to consist of two sections:—(a) The motorcar section; and (b) the motor-boat section. The establishment will he as under: One liout.-colonel in command, with one stall* officer (captain); majors, motor-car section 111, motor-boat section 0; captains, 32 and 11; subalterns, 128 and -K Each district will appoint one district senior officer in the motor-car section and one in the motor-boat section. The district senior officers will have jurisdiction over their respective sections of the corps,, and will be responsible to the commanding officer for the proper training and efficiency of their commands. Applicants for commissions in the corps must possess a thoroughly efficient motor-car or a sea-worthy motor-boat suitable for coast defence service, and will, prior to appointment, be required to pass a few simple tests relating to elementary motor mechanics. First appointments will be on probation.,., ~ Officers will be required to perform ten days' duty annually, consecutively or otherwise, as required, or twenty halfdays if called upon. All ranks will be required to attend at least six drill parades per annum for the purpose of receiving instruction in suitable subjects. Such parades will not count a.s "toura of duty, 1 ' for which pay and allowances will be granted. The duties of t'he corps will be entirely in connection with the headquarters district and coast defence staffs of the defence forces. Compulsory members of the territorial force are not eligible for appointment to tho corps. Except in the case of mobilisation of the forces, officers will only be called generally within a forty-mile radius of the place of assembly for manoeuvres, etc. When called out for duty officers will receive pay and allowance as laid down in "financial instructions nyd allowance regulations." Half rates only wiil ho paid for half-day tours. Certain extra allowance's will he made for wear-arid-tear of care, etc., in certain case*.
