Owing to the Maritz rebellion, General Botha is taking the field earlier than intended, witli several Dutch commandos of the old burgher lines coupled with (the regiments of the Union Defence Force. x The Government is adopting the sternest measures in the centres of disaffection, arresting prominent men suspected of sowing sedition. 1 Baekvelders' prisoners include a Germanised Afrikander, who was allegedly the go-between for the Germans .and Maritz;. It is understood that -Mariiz planned the arrest as a blind, and sent the Afrikander to Pretoria for the purpose of giving the Government misleading information, nominally in confidence, about the Gei man frontier. The autho ritics, however, were aware of the man's antecedents/and Maritz's design failed. General Hertzog has placed his scr vices at the Government's disposal.
