TERRITORIALS IN CAMP.

INSPECTION AT TAKAPAU. By Telegraph—Press Association. Takapau Camp, last night/ General Sir Jan Hamilton inspected the camp at Takapau in glorious weather. He was accompanied by his staff and General iGodlev. The'lions.. J. Allen, H. D. Bell," AV. Frascr, and Messrs. J. H. Scott and D. Buick, M's.P., were also in attendance. The General arrived at 2.30 p.m., and during the afternoon inspected the machine guns firing ball cartridges, watched the mounted in action, and also the infantry and artillery brigade. From a spectacular point of view, the proceedings were not particularly striking, but from a soldier's viewpoint most interesting. The General took a keen interest in the doings of all the troops, asking questions of the officers and complimenting them upon the work that he had seen.

In an interview, the Genera! said the men who had come under his notice were of a very line stamp. They were all country troops, and men who in some senses were half soldiers already. The mounted men could ride splendidly. The only thing that struck him was that horses were pretty cheap, and that men-were inclined to get at the bottom of them quickly in the regiments he had seen. The Manawatu Mounted Rifles were remarkably well mounted. The General inspected the camp and cook-houses, and expressed himself as well pleased with what he saw, the organisation being most admirable.

General training work in the cam]) is steadily proceeding. With the improved weather the men are taking interest in the task, and no complaint is now heard and there is no likelihood of the recurrence of the incident of Sunday night. The whole trouble seems to be solely due .to the fact of extra pay being wanted for the extra day involved in getting to and from the cam]). The matter is being inquired into.

To-morrow a big field day will be held. A case of diptheria occurred to-day in the Napier battery. There are several minor casualties, but nothing serious.

A BRIGHT DAY AT LAST. Takapau, Tuesday. The sun is smiling on Takapau to-dav, as if specially for the occasion of Sir lan Hamilton's visit this afternoon. The change is a most acceptable one to the troops, after the adverse conditions which have prevailed almost continuously since the men went into camp. The trouble of Saturday night subsided and on Monday evening peace reigned and the thing' that is" most troubling the demonstrative malcontents is what is going to happen t 0 them. An enquiry is being held into the affair. The programme for the afternoon is inspection by the-General, while to-morrow will be the big field dap

Tnif CANTERBURY CAMP. Christchureh, Tuesday. To-dav the casual camp started under Major Pinwill. Tt is estimated that between -WOO and 6000 territorials are under canvas. Yesterday a man had a narrow escnw from lining turn! alive. He wis awakened in the wivlv morning, and found the tent blazing, and as it was ■laced, iiv front he could not get out. He .was slightly singed
