THE PORT OF LONDON.

CASE FOB THE DEFENCE. Per Press Association. Mastertoo, Last Night. The Wairarapa Age publishes a letter received by the managing director of the Wellington Farmers' Meat Company from Gilbert, Anderson & Co., colonial agents, of London, under date Hay 9, dealing with the proposed establishment of the Bristol and Dominions Produce Association. Messrs. Gilbert, Anderson & Co. state that they cannot endorse th» statements which have been made and are convinced that they would not. bo supported by anyone with a knowledge of the business. They are, it is asserted, exaggerated and distorted as much in favor of Bristol as they are against the Port of London. Mr. Gilbert Anderson states that one thing beyond all others that lias retarded the improvement of conditions is that New Zealand farmers' have always gone in, for cheapness, rather than for efficiency. Shipments arrive with innumerable marks to numerous consignees, some of whom had a scarcity - of business experience. To clear ship- *\s ments, it is suggested that farmers should urge on the New Zealand Government the appointment of a couple of men to watch the .discharge of vessels and the loading of cargoes. If this were done, accurate reports on the conditions would be available, and from the facts ascertained improvements could he effected. In regard to storage accommqn elation, Mr. Gilbert Anderson points oat that there is refrigerated storage accom- l modation for !il)0,800 sheep at the North- .\\ est India dock, which is niuuh nearer ■ totv'n, and has none of the disabilities of the South-West dock. They conclude by saying: "In. our opinion great improvements have been, and are being, made in» handling frozen meat. Proof of this is furnished by the reduced insurance premiums, and improvements can be effected along rational and business lines." •
