SENSATIONAL ACCIDENT.
A COACH DRIVER KILLED. By Telegraph—Press Association. Palmerston N., Monday. A terrible exjierience befel the Rongotea coach which left Palmerston on Saturday afternoon. When about a mile from Rongotea the horses bolted and killed the driver, Archibald Eliott. instantly, overturning: the coach and precipitating from it with resultant bruises two passengers named Revolt and Classen. About 5 o'clock, when the darkness was becoming pronounced, the driver had dismounted to light the lamps and must have slipped when remounting the box, or the horses started too soon. EJiott fell near the horses, one of which lashed out crushing his skull and then tliev sped furiously on for about 200 vards, overturned the coach in an open drain, and hurled the passengers out. ''hey then proceeded to plunge, , with the result that two horses received mortal injuries. The passengers were not n v hurt, .but the coach was smashed.
Deceased was a single man, aged 34 years. He belonged to Tiraaru, and was part proprietor of the coaches.
