SHEEP DOG TRIALS.

CONCERT AND DANCE. Tlie Tiirata Hall was crowded on Thursday night, when a concert and dance were hold in connection with the Sheep-dog Trials. A really .splendid prograine was submitted to an appreciative audience by performers hailing from, lnglewood and New Plymouth, as well as locally. Mr. It. Sander presided. The following programme was submitted:—Overture, "Hearts and Flowers," Mrs. W. A. Monk (New Plymouth) ; song, "Lilacs," Miss Airey (lnglewood), who gave as an encore "Absent"; recitation, "A Handsome Man," Mr. Goldsworthy (New Plymouth), and as an encore, "A New-chum Norseman"; song, Mr. Cutler (lnglewood), encored; song, "The Hoses," Rev. llouehcn, and as an encore, "Two Cities"; duet, "The Sea of Class," Miss Guilford and Mrs. Gohling (encored); sailor's hornpipe, Mr. Eggleton (encored); recitation, "Kin Crandii," Mr. Stibbs (lnglewood); song, "Love's Old' Sweet Song," Miss Kenwood (lnglewood), who responded to an encore; song, "A Soldier and a Man," Mr. A, Chnng (encored); duet, "Pulaski's Banner," Mr. and. Mrs. .'). Sutherland (encored); song, "'The Bridge," Miss Airey; song, "A Pattern to the World," Mr. A. 0. Monk, and as an encore, "Yip 1 Addy"; recitation, "The Nancy Bell," Mr. IT, Lett; song, Mrs. Colding; song, "Good Company," Mr. Cutler. The accompaniments were played by Miss Guilford, Mrs. Monk and Messrs Sutherland and Cutler. At the conclusion the chairman returned thanks to all who had assisted at the concert, both as performers and audience. The secretary, Mr. F. L. , Street, supplemented the remarks and announced the winners of the first day's competition. The hall was then cleared, and dancing was commenced and continued (save for a break for welcome refreshment) until about 3 a.m. Messrs S. George and J. Drummond, as M's.C,' kept the ball moving merrily on an excellent floor. The music was provided by Messrs J. Sutherland (piano) and Cottier (violin), extras being contributted by Mr. W. A. .Monk and Mr. Eggleton. THE SMOKE CONCERT.

On Friday evening the annual smoke concert was held in the hall. Mr. H. Sander presided over a very large attendance. A very pleasant was spent in music and harmony, a lengthy toast list, diversified with songs and recitations, being discussed. During the evening the secretary presented the special prizes won at the meeting. The toast list was as follows:—"The King," proposed by the chairman (Mr. H. Sander); -The farata Sheep Dog Trial Club," proposed by Mr. Goldsworthy and responded to by Messrs H. Sander (chairman) and F. L. Street (secretary); "The Judge," proposed by Mr. IT. Waite and responded to by Mr. W. B. Grant, of Westown; "The Successful Competitors," proposed by the judge (Mr. W. R Grant) and responded to by Messrs F. M. Standish and R. McMuHian; "The Unsuccessful Competitors," proposed by Mr. A. Cork-ill and responded to by Messrs IT. Lambert and L. Ayres; "The Visitors," proposed by Mr. W. Topping and responded to by Messrs Goldsworthy, C. R. Street and IT. A. Finlay; "Local" Industries," proposed by Mr. Templar and responded to by Messrs Paterson and Williams; "Stock Agents," proposed by Mr. A. Corkill and responded to bv Messrs St. Hill. Kidd and Goldsworthy'; "The Press." proposed by the chairman and responded to by representatives present.

The musical portion of the entertainment was provided by Messrs Kggleton (piann solo), R. C. Te'mpler, H. Lambert, St. Hill, Monk, F. L. Street, Moody and Finlay (songs), Goldsworthy and Lett (recitations). Mr. Eggleton played the accompaniments. During the evening very appreciative reference was made to the kindness of Mr. Guilford in placing his property at the disposal of tile dub, and cheers were accorded Mr. anl Mrs. Guilford, the judge (Mr. Grant), chairman (Mr. IT. Sander), secretary (Mr. F. L. Street) and Mrs. Street.
