Archbishop of the old ' Roman Catholic Church in Omit Britain and Ireland; aged 111. Archbishop MiVthcw was consecrated at Utrecht by Archbishop (Jul in IMS. He is a lineal descendant of Sir David Matliew, of Llandafl', standard-hearer to Edward IV. in 1401. lie was the author of a number of hooks, and .joint editor with the late Father Tvrrell of the third edition of Dr. 11. ('. Lea's "History of Sacerdotal Celibacy," and wrote articles for the English Historical Review, the Reunion Magazine, etc. He originated the idea of keeping wild animals in captivity without the employment of ca<*es in zoological gardens, the plan having been adopted in flerinany with "real, success, and is now being tried in the London Zoo. The Archbishop also succeeded in acclimatising the anthropoid apes in England.
