SNATCHED FROM THE RIVER

A TIMELY RESCUE. Wanganui, October 28. A somewhat exciting incident was witnesed off Putiki this morning. Three Maori men were in a canoe which, by gome means overturned. The river, being' considerably swollen by recent rains, was running very fast, arid the canoe travelled down stream at a rapid rate. One of the men, who had saved his paddle, made strenuous efforts to head it into the bank, but without much success. The man's plight was fortunately observed from Putiki and a man put out! single-handed in a boat to the rescue. He came up with the overturned canoe off Gonville and, getting the three Maoris aboard, managed to land them, safely on the Putiki side, though a good way below the pa. The canoe continued its course down the river, and was soon lost to sight.
