WAITARA HARBOR.
MR. . LESLIE REYNOLDS' PROPOSALS. iA special meeting of the Waitara Harbor Board was held on 'Friday evening, when it was hoped Mr* .Leslie Reynolds' report re harbor improvement would be available. The. chairman, however, received a letter during the day, stating the report was not quite ready. Mr. Jenkins informed the members accordingly, and addied that Mr. Reynolds referred the board to his report given in January, 1901, wherein he emphasised the point that it would be usless going on with the north or south walls unless external works were also carried out, on the system recommended by Sir John Coode. This would mean a very big expenditure. Mr. Reynolds' idea was that a flushing weir should be .erected just above the bridge, at a cost of between £4OOO and I £6OOO, the effects of which would be the obtaining of a fresh whenever desired. As members desired to hear the 1801 report in full, it wis read. The chairman said Mr. Reynolds held the same views now, and he would probably recommend again the building of the weir. Mr. Rattenbury said it seemed a most extraordinary thing that the north wall was carried out since the report of 1901
was received. The chairman thought the board had better go into the matter after Mr. Reynolds' report was to hand. The board had to do something to keep the river open. Mr. Reynolds was convinced thai nothing would do better than the flushing weir above the bridge. Mr. Hine suggested that the first step should be to find out what money they had to spend. The chairman was certain the board . could obtain the money to build the | weir.
Mr. Hiae said he understood that building the weir would not involve any danger to the town. The chairman said he asked Mr. Reynolds on that point, and he assured hira there would le no danger. Mr. Birdling remarked that the nastj corner above the bridge had to be taken into consideration when backing up the
water. » Mr. Smith asked if there were works anywhere .else of a similar nature to the proposition, or was it purely an experiment? The chairman said Mr. Reynolds was perfectly satisfied the flushing would do the work. Captain Thompson said Mr. Reynolds positively guaranteed a fresh every 12 hours could b? obtained by means of the weir.
The matter was held over, pending the receipt of Mr. Reynolds' latest report.— Mail.
