Maria Golding, aged 72, a widow residing with her family in Lome street, was found at the foot of the stairs, with, a severe wound on the head. It is supposed she fell while coming downstairs. INJURED BY DYNAMITE. Hokitika, Monday. A serious accident happened at the Waiho Gorge on Saturday. John McColl, when using soma, dynamite, was caught by the explosion, and his right side was blown in, causing a compound fracture of the ribs and also injuries to his leg. His condition is serious. He is a married man with a wife and two children, who reside in the North Island. . A SAD AFFAIR. Dargaville, Last Night. Information, was received to-day fTom Hokianga to the effect that a man named Bourke was found dead at Pakanae Gorge yesterday. Only meagre particulars are to hand, but it is surmised that the deceased had been visiting his wife's grave yesterday, being the fourth anniversary of her death, and, when returning home, his horse shied and threw him off into a ravine about 100 ft deep. Deceased was 57 years ol age, and took a deep interest in public affairs at Hokianga. FOUND DROWNED. Christchurch, Last Night. At the inquest on John Halloran, 84 years of age, who was found in the river Avon on Sunday morning, the evidence did not disclose how he got into the river. His daughter stated that he had belonged to the 58th Regiment. He was not subject to fits, was never ill, and was steady in his habits. The only explanation she could offer was that he had lost his way, as his eyesight was not good. She last saw him alive about nine o'clock on Friday morning, when, as was his wont, he left for the Cathedral Square, where he spent most of his time talking to other old men. When he did not return at 7.30 p.m. she began to feel anxious. A verdict that deceased was found drowned, and that there was j no evidence to show how ho got into the water, was recorded.
A MAN MISSING. Palmerston North, Last Night. A man named McMahon, aged. 35, working at Fitzherbert, left Palmerston North at 11.15 on Saturday night for home. His horse was found on Sunday, with one stirrup gone, and a scarred knee, near Lancaster's ford, whieh was high on Saturday owing to the rain. The police are instituting a search. It is feared that McMahon was drowned.
