Trumpcr won the toss, and opened with Bardsley to Vogler and Pearse. Pearse's ball wag a yorker, and bowled Trumper'* middle stump. In the next over Bardsley tipped a short one to the slips, which Snooke held. Kel'leway and Mcllhone together played carefully, and quickly caused a change in the bowling. McElhone showed great freedom for a colt. A 33 Kelleway stood in front to Pegler, and was given out. Macartney followed, and was received with ironical cheers. He, however, quickly settled down in a determined manner, and showed, in spite of many recent failures, that he was not a back number. McElhone played faultlessly, and with Macartney completely collared the bowling. The youngster's hard drive* and late cuts were particularly attractivc. Sehwarz tried his whole contingent of bowling without success. At 38 Snooke, in the slips, missed a chance of catching Macartney off Pegler. McElhone continued to force the pace, piayine beautifully. Collins joined Macartney, and quickly justified his inclusion in the team. Macartuey scored 50 in an hour, and then played with greater freedom. He brought up the hundred in another 40 minutes.
At 119, Pegler caught Macartney at deep cover off Faulkner. He had batted for two hours and ten minutes, hitting 16 fourers. Collins and Emery maintained a forceful partnership until th« former was caught at second slip by Strieker off Nourse. He had 7 fourcra m his total.
