TOWN PLANNING
LEGISLATION ASKED FOE. By Telegraph.-—Press Association. Duncdin, Last Night. Town planning formed a subject of discussion at the annual meeting of the Institute of Sruveyors to-day, and the following motion was agreed to: "That this meeting recommends for the favorable consideration of the Council of the Institute the desirability of legislation in the matter of city building and town planning on the lilies of the English Act."
In moving this, Mr. C. W. Adams, editor of the Surveyors' Journal, said it was not necessary to go outside of New Zealand for examples of the pernicious results of the system'of allowing owners perfect liberty. Every city—Auckland, Wellington, Christchureh and Dunedin—contained instances of the evil wrought, shims being newly created and jesrybuikling permitted. Drainage was not properly attended to, and after the owner had exercised his own will it was frequently impossible to effect proper drainage. lie submitted that New Zealand should establish a lead in this matter over Australian centres, and the Jlons. Fowlds and Fintilay had, by publit utterances, given indications of the support they would give to any scheme of ellicient town-planning.
