The room where the bodies of Mrs. Batty© and child were found had been set alight apparently in an endeavor to hide the crime. Battye was well off, and very affectionate to his wife and child. He had been married only two years. It was evident that the murder was committed while the victims were asleep.
AN OPEN VERDICT. Received 29, 1.1.30 p.m. Adelaide, December 29. At the inquest on the Battyes an open verdict was returned, the evidence being insufficient to clear up the mystery of how the deaths were caused.
