OPUNAKE RAILWAY.
REPORT TO PARLIAMENT. The report of the engineers who surveyed the Opunake-Eltham and Opu-nake-Stratiord routes has been put before Parliament, in round figures the estimates were:- - Route Miles. e. Stratford >t;<:. 222.11110 Hawera 211" 18:1.0110 I'Jtham ->; i 153,000 Te r.oti ±> 153.000 Tim Te Roli route, being oil all points Ihe most suitable to serve the interests of the district, ami the one most likely to receive the. greatest amount of tratlic, wa- recommended for adoption. There is only one feature about I lie route that might call for amendment, says the ciigineer-iu-cbiel'. and that ithat the line, where it join- the open Hue, should tend to convey produce by the shortest route to the nearest main seaport, which is New I'lvmoutli. A line could be run from the Iwenlymile point at the crossinrr of Jlastiii"road northward towards Kltliam. but it would entail an addition.l mile .if new line and besides would rim nearly parallel to the present open line. ' The junction should therefore lie formed at Te Roti station in such a manner thai trains could run towards New Plymouth and Hawera without I lie necessity of shunting.
