NEW YEAR CARNIVAL.

The Exhibition Again Largely j; Visited. STRONG COUBTRY COMTIHGENT. Tho attendance at the exhibition on Monday was very large, a large number of country people availing themselves of the holiday to come into town. It is estimated that 3500 travelled to New Plymouth by the early trains, and although the central attraction was naturally the ' swimming sports, a large proportion ', found their way to St. Michael's i Square. Altogether 4000 people i were presuil, tho amount taken at the gales totalling close on £IOO. The sum of £57 was realised at the fireworks display, and £93 at the swimming sports. The number of meals served at the dining-room was nearly 1500, a fact which proves tho increasing popularity of this adjunct to the numerous attractions of the exhibition. The committee in charge must too congratulated on the completeness of the arrangements, such as is very seldom seen in an institution of this kind. SMMING SPORTS. A very large attendance .was recorded at the swimming sports held in the llecreation Grounds on Monday, in connection with the carnival. Fully two thousand people must have been present.
