GUARDED RUSSIAA STATEMENT. (Received August 1, 9.31 p.m.) LONDON, August 1. An unconfirmed rumour isi current in St. Petersburg that Port Arthur has fallen. Reuter's Che-foo agent states that a Japanese merchant has received from tc Chinaman, whom he can trust, a report that the Japanese have occupied every post except Golden Hill. The struggle for the mastery entailed terrible losses on both 3ides. The Russian Intelligence Bureau admits that the beseigers have made great progress. PREMATURE RUMOURS. PORT ARTHUR IS NOT YET FALLEN. (Received August 1, 11.59 p.m.) LONDON, August 1. Chinese arriving at Che-foo from Port Arthur declare that the firing died down late on Friday, when the, Japanese had carried the last fortification. ALEXIEFF QUITS THE PORT. EXPECTED, WITH HIS STAFF, AT VLADIVOSTOK. (Received August 2, 0.6 a.m.) LONDON, August 1. Admiral Prince Alexieff and his staff of twenty officers, ia expected at Vladivostok. OUT OF THE JAWS OF DEATH. INTO THE ARMS OF JAPANESE CAPTORS. LONDON, August 1. The Moji correspondent of the newspaper Asahi states that two Russian steamers, with a number of civilians on board, emerged from Port Arthur during a fog on the 24th, under convoy of torpedo-boat destroyers. Japanese destroyers gave chase, surrounding the steamers, whose surrender followed.
