Sir Tbos. Liptoo was irijured but no' seriously One sailor was drowned and anotLei badly injured. London, April 18. • Details tf the accident are to the effect that a northerly breeze was blowing, the yacht being under ordinary working canvas with jackyarder. The challenger's lee-rail was buried to a corsiderable depth. The EquaJl was far more sudden than that which wrought such damage to the Shomrcck 11. while racing in the Solent in Maj, 1901, when the King was aboard. It broke the eye of one of the screws securing the rigging ou the windward and the others gave way, the strain of the sails snapping the mast seven feet above thn deck, and everything going by the board. Sir Thomas Lipton, who was standing holding his binoculars, was thrown headlong down the companion way, a sailor fa'lJDgm'op of him. SirThoma* was shaken and received bruises on his shoulder, his hand being lac rated by the broken binoculars.
The s'eward, Mr Collier, was star cling ne.r Sir Thomas Liptcn at the moment the squall struck the yacht. He wss thrown overboard and swam clear, but the cold overcoming him he was drowned. A. duplicate steel mast is being made, and is expected to be ieady in a fortnight. I In the course of an interview, Sir Thomeß Lipton said the only lasting regret he had over the accident was in relation to Mr Collier's death. He thought that probably the reau't of the damage would cans- six weeks delay, but he hopes that the Shamrock will be repaired and reach Sandy Hook in August. CattiDg away and recovering the wreckage occupied five hours. The Prirco of Waifs sent a siur'l-r m.gs;»e, and made inquiries as to the sutfeier'. Keen sympathy over the accident is expressed in America.
