The Daily News. SATURDAY, APRIL 18, 1903. TRADE WITH CANADA.

The news or a new outlet tor New Zealand produce will be good news to every one who is interested in the welfare of the colony, and it is with sincere plenmre tbnt we refer to the proposed initiation of a line of large cargo ttiaraers which is being arranged for betweea Canada and New Zealand find Australia. This new line is being promoted in this colony by a New Zealander (Mr Alley), who is a native of Hawke's Bay, and who evidently retains a warm love for the land of his birth, which is both satisfactory and patriotic, Mr Alley hag lived for some years in Western Canada and the United States, and is now in New Zealand, and information which he has disclosed states that the new line will be called I ha Canadian, Australian and New Zealand—Puget Sound Steamship ' Company. Arrangements have already •been made for four large steamers, two of 8000 and two of 6500 tons, with which a regular service will be maiotainiid between Vancouver anil Auckland, the vessels touching at San Francifco, and after touching at Auckland and other New Zealand ports, prcceed to Australia. Auckland merchan'shave already taken up the matter with great enthusiasm and promised very substantial support, which is also expected to be even more strongly evinced in Weilington and other ports at which it is proposed to touch. The question of cargo is one about which there may be considerable difference of opinion, con- ' sidering the poor support afforded to the H uddart Parker Company some years ago, but the great progress which bas been made in all the colonies sines then, and particularly in Western Canada, leads to the belief that the new line will be well supported. Further--1 more, Mr Alley says the Canadian Manufacturing Association will give ' tha tiew line all their support, and he considers there will be ample inward cargo. It is stated also that the Canadian Pacific Kailway Company hag promised very low rates on goods produced in the large manufacturing centres of Eastern Canada, that Canadian manufacturers of agricultural implements and machinery, woodware and brushware, will be able to compete on even terms with other places. A great deal of the goods which are known under the general term American, even now come from Canada, via New York and London, The Cana dians are able, alee, to produce equally well and as cheaply, overything made by their Yankee rival?, and given such a cheap and direct route, there is no reason why the Oanadia&s should not secure a profitable field for their enterpme in New Zealand and Australia. Kegardirg cargo from this end, Mr Alley states that there is an excellent market in Canada, and the northwestern States of the United States for N«w Zealand wool, skins, hides, ond tallow, while the opposite seasons even hold out a hope of a market oo tht. Pacific Coast for New Zealand fruit and butter. Mr Alley says thera is ».rj enormous population on the Pacific Ooss*, which have their outlet through Seattle or Puget Sound, aud we can only hope that these expectations may ba realised. The productions of the Pacific Islands, a considerable number of which belong to New Zealand, have not been lost sight of, and there is an excellent market for their products. One very gratifying feature ,if the new service is that it will be pur-.iy a British one. The steamers will be British steamers, flying the British flag, and

trading principally iu British products. The service is one which connot but be of incalculable benefit to the colony, aud will, we hops, receive tho cordial and practical support of all parts of the c;lony.
