"CLUB ROOT."
Local gardeners, amateurs and otherwise, have doubtless at times noticed on pulling up their cabbage stalks tbat the roots have developed into a solid lump. Few, however, are probably aware that it is an undesirable disease. Mr W. Howell, of Ohatswortfi Eous°), New Plymouth, eome little timi ago found some of these deformed roots in his garden, and being curious brought a samp'e to this office, ard we advised bim !o seed it al ng to the Government Biologist. Mr Howell has since received a report from Mr Kirk, in effect as follows:—"The plants are effected by a disease known as ' Club Root'; when this disease makes its appearance, the very first thing to be done is to burn all th# infected roots and leaves. Never throw them on the rubbish heap, or feed pigs or othnr domestic animals. Such a course provides the ber. mean* of distributing the disease and infecting the whole garden (1) Avoid the use of manure from rubbish heaps if diseased plants hive been deposited there; (2) dig in quicklime up to 35 bushels per acre, this will arrest the dise>seand has proved effectual many times; (3) raise your own seedlings in a bit of clean ground, or ajj. least make sure that they do not come from an infected property. This disease causes crormeus !cs< in most agricultural countries, hut treatment for two or thre« ye*rs, as suggested above, has proved effective in all cases, provided good drainage exists."
