CORRESPONDENCE.
[We do not hold ourselves responsible for opinions expressed by correspondents.] LICENSING OOMMITTEE. TO THE EDITOR. J Silt,—ln the interest of the public generally we would ask you to permit j us an opportunity of putting clearly before the public, through your columns, the position in respect of the election of a Licensing Bench, as we understand it. It appears that there are three courses open to the electors: Ist. To nominate a larger number than five, an J thoo to proceed to select five from the nominees by a general election. 2nd, To nominate five only, and thus to have theso declared elected without a'iy contest. 3rd. Nut to make any nominations and thus to Lave the duties of a Committee to be performed, as at present, by the Stipendiary Magistrate. Ei'her of the two latter courses would, we are informed, save the Borough and County ratepayers at least £IOO, and, so far as we are concerned, we cannot but think that this is a saving well worthy of grave consideration. We have, at the request of a number of electors, decided to accept nomination, but we wish that the electors generally should be under no misapprehension either in according us their votes, or in abstaining from nominating others. We are under no pledge whatever as to our future line of action in any particular, but each of us will, if elected, bring to bejr on every subject and every application brought before ua his patient and un- j biasssd'consideration, and will, after deliberation, decide in such manner as he considers just aid fair in the bssfc interests of the community. Thanking you in anticipation.—We are yours faithfully, W. L. NEWMAN, J. S. McKELLAR, W. F. BROOKING, DANIEL BERRY, E. MAXWELL.
