A special meeting of the Baard was; held on Wednesday. Pressnt: Messrs. j McAllum (chairman), Adlam, Wade, ; Allsworth and Kennedy. Mr. A. Morton, the newly-ele 'tod member, was present ;md after being 1 officially introduced to the members by ; the chairman took the sei<t lately oc- j cupied by Mr B. A. Hignett. j The Chairman's action in making! : the following appointments was con- i firmed: —Miss J. Sinclar, Kaiauai [(assistant), V. Smith, Cardiff (assistant), Miss H, Mackenzie, Lepperton (assistant), Mr. L, Brownlte (temporary) Tututawa. Messrs Faull and Wade were elected as the Baard's representatives on the Board of School Commissioners.. The Durham-road Com mi ttee applied for alterations to the teacher's residence - Referred to the architect to attend to. The Kaima'a Committee wrote relative to the Inspector's remarks as to the necessity for frosting the windows and some minor repairs. They seated they had asked the Board ti frost the windows, and as to the other matter, '.he committee had n > fun is. Mr Allsworth suggested the matter should be referred to Mr Morton to report on. Mr Morton thought the repairs asked for were eo,trifling thi>t it tesmeri hardly worth sending a member ef the Board to report on, as a visit to the school would entail the loss of the whole day. Tha Tariki Committee wrote «g>iin drawing attention to the overcrowded state of the infant school. The Fitzroy Committee applied for two new gratep. The Kent-road Committee applied for more desks.—Referred to Inspector to supply, i The Stratford Committee applied for a firewood shed to be erected, Mr Morton mov< d that in view of the stats of its fiuacces, the Board regrets being unable to Gumply with the request. The Batapiko Committpra nsked that the old stables in the school grounds might be used as a store-room for the teacher, and for the committee's purposes.—Referred "back to the committee to deal with. The teacher at Waihi wrote relative to payment of half cost of rauge and rent for paddock for his horse. He asked j for consideration.
Mr Wade moved that after hearing the teacher's explanation the Boird supply a range. Mr Alls worth seconded. Mr Morton moved that a yew'n rent of the paddock be remitted, Mr Adlam seconded, The amendment was lost and the motion carried. The Inspector recommended that the pupil teachers' exnmination commerce on 23rd Juno, and that the raidivinfcr holidays commence on June 27th, the schools to re-open on July 7th.—Adopted. The Education Department wrote thanking the Board for granting leave of absence to Miss Arrow ; also for use of the Board's r-iom for holding an inquiry.—To ba acknowledged. Thn Tarata Committee wrote relative to the teacher's work, asking thu Board to change the present teacher and pointing out that a femalo teacher would be more suitable than a male, as the majority of the children were girls who required to be taught sewing, for which no provision was now raSde, The Inspector's examination report was read. It appeared that out of 31 children present only nine passed. Mr Wade moved that the matter be referred to the chairman with power to net.—Carried.
Leave of absence for 10 Hays, as recommended by Dr. Harding, was granted to Miss Tuck, of the Central School. The New Plymouth Committee wrote calling attention to the staffing at tho Oourtenay-street school consequont on Miss Arrow's leave of absence. The Chairman pointed out that th<> Board had already taken steps to staff' the school. A. Ambridgs wro f e s'ating tint after , consulting his solictor ha found that tho News Company hnd acted illegally in tendering for contract work for the Board, and that the tendsr for printing the annual report was his; also that if not piren to him he would take steps 'to iuflict the pains and penalties under 1 the Act applying to tbe same. (Loud laughter). - To lie on the tab'e. The subject of the site for a school at Mangaehu was brought up, and held over on account of Mr Mackay's absence.
Th® architect is to report on repairs to the Kairaata school, about which tho committee wrote to the Board, and also on the request of the Fitzroy committee for new grates. Enlargement of the Tariki school was referred to the Inspector and Mr Mackay for their report. The Puktaruhe Commissioner wrote asking for a supply of firewood.—' Granted. Mr Allsworth asked the Architect's opinion on the question of raising the present West liifants'school before ar y enlargements were taktrn in band. The Architect said it would be absolutely necessary to raise the walls fo comply with tbe Health Act, The proposed new building was intended to hold 80 mere children. The Ngairo committee wrote re improvement's to grounds, etc., and asking for a subsidy, the cost beiDg estimated at £3o.—lt decided to grant up to £l2 10s.
j The cummittea appointed to report - on required enlargements at Inglewood and Norfolk-road recommend'd the ' extension of the iDglowood school by r 24ft., at a cost of £250, and the extension of the Norfolk-road school by [ 16ft., at a cost of .£IBO. Latrines at . Inglewood also required immediate attention. Mr Allsworth moved the adoption of i the report as regards both schools, and 1 that the work be gone on with. | Mr Morton seconded, and said the ! Norfolk-road school was built to ac commodate 70 children, and there wan an average attendance of 112, out of a roll of 120. The motion was carried. The balance of the amount available, £IBO, was voted to the Wortley-road school. The architect was then instructed to call for tenders for additions at West Infants', Courtenay-strefit, Silinbury road, Inglewood, and Norfolk-ioar,and for alternate tenders for removal and re-erection of the Wortlpy-road school, or for erecting a new building on thy 1 new site at Lincoln-road. The Midhirst Committee wro' e de-! clinining to accept the Board's recom-j unendation in regard to an as-ds'ant tQßchpr. —Tho matter was left to the chairman to deal with. The Board voted a sum of £l2 for chairman's expenses to Wellington. Fresh maetings of householders were ordered to b-: h"ld in those district* which had failed to fk-ct committees. The Board then adjourned.
