Mr H. Wigram nas been elected onappesed as Mayor of Christchurch.
Mr B. 0. Bobbins, far many years a Borough Councillor, has been elected unopposed to the Mayoralty of Hawera. At Danedin Judge Williams upheld tha appeal against the decision of Mr Cruickshank, S.M., that legislation did not provide a close season for shooting game. Mr Mallard, J.P., whose constant appearance on the Dunedin Bench when gum Wing owes were concerned has been discussed by the Press, has been called upon by the Justice Department to tender his resignation.
i It is stated that the committees of the [Wellinrton City Council and Melrose Borough Council have agreed torecemmend lothe respective Councils that the amalgamation be carried out on the lines that the city agrees to provide within «ix months for extending the tramways to Kilbirnie, Island Bay, and Brooklyn if the ratepayers of those districts agree to be specially rated for that purpose; that the drainage in those districts I ibe provided for within a reasonable time if the ratepayers agree to pay special rates ;' that Melrose be exempt from rates respecting any loans the City Oeuncil has already raised.
Traffic from New Zealand on the Pacific cable, intercolonial and international, commenced on Wednesday. Bt. Matthew's (Auckland) new church foundation stone was laid by the Governor at an immense gathering on Wednesday. The church is expected to be the finest in the colony, though not quite so large as Christchurch Cathedral, seating about 1000 people. It will be built of Oamaru stone, and will cost £30,000. It is to be completed, in three years. The Duchess of Bedford and other society leaders are appealing for £103,000 for the cancer investigation fund. i
I Mr Hanbury annonnced in the House of Commons that the butter regulations, fixing the standard of moisture at 16 per cent of water, will be enforced on May 15th. 1 The Cobden Club has issued a manifesto, in which the duties on grain and flour are made the text of an attack on the Government policy. It is argued that the dutie« are equivalent to L 4,000,000 wrested from the consumers.

An exceptionally heavy thunderstorm occurod on Wednesday afternoon, the lightning being unusually vivid. For some minutes the downpour of rain bad» fair to cause some damage, but soon passed off.
