LAND BOARD.

Thk Board met on Monday, Present: The Commissioner of Crown Lands (Mr Jaa. McKenzie, in the chair), Messrs Kelly, Heslop and Rattenbury,

The Gazette notice of Mr McKenzie's appointment as Commissioner was read. A resolution of welcome and congratulation, moved by Mr Kelly, was carried, and Mr McKenzie returned thanks, and briefly expressed his views upon the promotion of settlement, and in general the extension of all assistance possible to settlers in the 1 back districts.

The following lands had been applied for since last meeting: —Section 33, block 9, Mimi, 632 acres, A. B. Jacksoo, 0.r.p.; section 32, block 9, Mimi, 457 acres, E. Rattenbury, 0.r.p.; section 2, block 9, Waro, 340 acres, Thos. Sheehy, 1.i.p.; section 1, block 5, Mimi, 826 acres, Wm. Schmidt, l.i.p. - Approved. Mr StrauchoD, late Commissioner for the district, wrote wishing members good-bye.—On Mr Kelly's motion the following resolution was unanimously oirried; —" While congratulating Mr Strauchon on his b°iug appointed Commissioner to a larger district, the Board regrets losing his services as Commissioner and chairman of the Board, with whom he has worked in cordial agreement for a period of nine years. A resolution with a similar purpose was passed on receipt of a letter from Mr W. Nathan, kte Road Inspector for Whangamomona district, but now transferred to Pahiatuj.

The Commi=sioner repined that the sale of section 970, town of Stratford, had not been completed as required.— deposit is to be forfeited, and the gale declared null and void. The transfer of section 4, block 4, Huiroa, from 0. B. Lever to 0". J, Priest was agreed to. An application from G. E. Burton to transfer his half interest in section 6, block 2, Upper Waitara, to G. M. Crawford was referred to the ranger. The application of A. Maurice to transfer section 4, bloak 10, Pouatu, to G. E. Wilson was approved on the latter undertaking to complete improvements and comply with residence requirements. Applications to sublet were agreed to as follows:-A. 0. Upson to H. H. Upson, section 24, block 5, Ngatimaru; 0. Skitrop to J. Mordin, section 22, block 15, Ngatimaru. A number of applications for permission to mortgage were dealt with. Leasts wilt be issued in acpqrdance with the Commissioner's certificate to the following • —W. Gill, sections 25 and 55, and Janus Duncan, section 56, both in block 13, Pouatu; P. Webb, section 66, William Wooduey, sections 74 and 76, and John Groves, section 68, all in blrok 14, Pouatu. The lease of A. Thompson, sen., for sections 3 and 4, Pukearuhe Belt, was declared forfeited, as he has not paid rent sinca Qctober, 1898, and has taken no steps to effect §, surrender. A lease for one year was granted to T. Sullivan for certain Crown land on the Mimi stream, near ils juoction with the Mangamoebo. On Mr Spenoer's (solioitor, Stratford) application, permission to occupy a site for a store and Post Office on Mr J. Neilson's suction 26, block 10, Ngatimaru, was granted, in terms of seotion 48 of the Land Acs, 1892, sub-sections 7 and 8. The following schedules for expenditure of " thirds " and " fourths " wero agreed to:—Clifton County Council £720 17s 2d, Patea West Road Board £ll 15s Bd, Patea County Council .£26 14s 3d. The Stratford County Council was given permission to expend accrued hnd fund from section 11, block 8, Ngaire, on the Wingrove road, instead of the old Andarsod-road.

Correspondence from the Waimate Road Board and Mr O'Sullivan, selector of section 4, block 6, Kaupokonui, the latter protesting against the " thirds " from his section being used in piyment of interest on a special loan.—lt was resolved that the Board cannot agree to Mr O'Sullivan's request, as the land fund has already been pledged for payment of interest. The raogar's report on the grave 1 reserve in septpn 62, blook 3, Egmont, was read, and it was rego}ved that if. the Taranaki County Council will clear the land of blackberry within a month,, it will be vested in the Council. Mr L. Sladden, surveyor, submitted a plan, showing coil outcrops in the Tangarakau vallty.— Acknowledged, and noted o withhold lands from disposal until further inquiry is made. A letter from T, Avery, asking that ia portion (15chains)of the Holsworthy road, from the Avenue-road, be opened, J was referred to the ranger for his re;port, I

P. Henley's application to transfer sections 13 and 14, block 4, Omons, to Thcs. Henley, was agreed to. A. F. Chapman was allowed to surrender section 94, block 8, Waimate (Takaora settlement), the applicant to J forfeit his deposit. It was decided that in future the day' of meeting be altered from the first' Monday to the first Tuesday in each month, at 9.30 a.m. instead of 11.30 a.m. j The Commissioner was authorised |to grant W. Lawler's application to transfer section 6, block 16, Ngatimaru, to Jno. Manson, provided all 1 . | matters are in order. I The Board rose at 3.40 p.m.
