ACCIDENT AT A RAILWAY CROSSING.

PER PRESS ASSOCIATION. I Napieb, January 18. A serious accident occurred this] evening as the 5 p.m. train from Hastings to Napier was travelling b'awepn Hastings and Tomoaca. About half-| way between the two places there is a private efo sing which is protected by j a gate on each side of the line. As ; ! the train approached this spot a light gig in which were two-ffl'f named i Thompson and Lourdon and a boy, i attempted to cross the line, with the result that the train crashed into the vehicle, smdShitig the gig, killing the horse, and injuring the two men rather severely, the boy escaping with slight bruises. The train was at occe stopped* the injured men brought to town and taken to the hospital, where it wm found that Thompson was suffering from a fractured thigh, and Lourdon from severe bruises on the chest. It is not anticipated, however, that- any serious results will ensue. The two met! are butchers* It is difficult to understand ho* the accident can have happened, as the line at this Spot runs quite straight, and the train can re seen a long way off< The' railway authorities rendered every possible assistance, and the men were made as comfortable as they could be under the circumstances.
