BOWLING.

OPENING OF THB STRATFORD GREEN. At the invitation of the Stratford Club mveral members of the New Plymouth Glnb went to Stratford on Thursday afternoon to take part in the opening of the Stratford green for the season. There was also present a contingent from the Hawera Gab, go that thu gathering was a thoroughly representative one of the bowl'ng fraternity in the district. The green proved to be in good order; there was «n excellent supply of refreshments; the weather was splendid; and the presence of Mr McKay's string band all combined to make the occasion oce of great pleasure to all concerned.

Mr Woodhead, President of the Stratford Club, heartily welcomed the visiting players, and formally opened the green. Mr O. Tisch, vice-president of New Plymouth Club, expressed the pleasure it gave him and the other mem v e-f« of his Club to attend at the opening re »- mony, though ha deeply regretted that Mr Jas. Paul, their president, was not present on this auspicious occasion. He congratulated the Stratford Club on opening such a magnificent green. He alluded to the changes which had taken place during the 23 years he had been in the district, ard to the enterprise displayed by toe townspeople of Stratford, who in the matter of their bowling green had set older clubs a-leFß~n. He concluded by wishing the club every success, and trusted they would have a jolly good time.

The Myor of Stratford (Mr T atton) also made a few remarks, and then play commenced, the visitors being joined with the home club in the rinks.
