MASSACRE AT MATHIAS ISLAND.
[PER PRESS ASSOCIATION. | (Received 28, 5.28 p.m.) Sydney, April 28. The steamer Moresby has brought details of a ma-sacre at St, Matbias Island in the Bismarck Brchipelago. While at New Britain the yaoht Eberhsrd, owned by Herr Mencke who was conducting a scientific expedition in the Archipelago, arrived and reported that when Mencke, bis secretary Caro, the doctor and tome native boys camped, tbe Mathias Islanders attacked them in gre„t force. The doctor was speared in the leg but managed to escape, A party went to the scene and found Mencke dead and Caro so severely injured that he died after removal te the yacht. Later, Received 29, 12.47 a.m. Sydney, April 28. Menake "vns a milionaire. Six natives of Lis party were also killed, but not before fourteen cannibals had been shot down,
