FIB PKMS ASSOCIATION. Received 2,6.12 p.m. London, Aptil 1. Obituary. —Sir John Stainer, the eminen; musician, aged 61. [The death of Sir John Stainer following so closely on that of Dr. Hopkins will be deeply felt in musical circles. As organist of St. Paul's Cathedral and a composer not only of church but of secular music Dr. Stainer had a world-wide reputation. Born in 1840 he commenced his musical career, like ether distinguished organists, as a chorister, though curiously enough it was at St. Paul's that bis early days were spent. When only 19 years of age he secured the appointment of frganist at Magdalen College, Oxford, and seized the opportunity of graduating in arts as well as musio. In 187S ha succeeded Sir John Gees at St. Paul's Cathedral, and from that time •nward devoted hit energies to improving the musical portion of the service—a by no me in? easy task, but cno sueeeasf ally accomplished. A brilliant instrumentalist, a sc'entific musician, and a, composer of considerable ability, and original'*? Sir John occupied an unique position in tbe musical world, and was an authority on matters pertaining to his profession recognised throughout the musical world. He received the honour of knighthoed in 1888 in recognition of his services and in the intern's of music.]
