THE STYCHE CASE.
[PBB PBH3S ASSOCIATION. Wellington, March 27,
Mr. Springer, continuing the argument in the S'yche case, submitted thai two vital questioDS were whether the letters produced were written by Styehe's machine and whether the breakage was accidental. The machine, produces all the peculiarities found in the letters and Dune that were nr.t. The evidence was very strong though not assented to by all the witnesses tha* the breakage was wilful. The above facts alone*ere sufficient to justify the jury but' th«»e were others. There was the parallelism in the language of the lettars and in Styehe's conversation. * The jurv toe had seen the accused's demeanour in the witness At the interview of August 3rd he was clearly en his guard. Mr. Joyat, in reply, urged that thn case was peculiarly one requiring to b" dealt with by trained minds and particularly adapted to be teviewed by tb<; Court. As to the breakage it did not entul the cecclusion that it was wilful unless the evidence was overwhelming, whereas it was very evenly balanced. TL'e Court reserved judgment.
