Interesting reading will be found on our first and fourth pages. During October 21 persons were placed under tbo charge of the Public Trustee for management. The total estimated population of the colony, exclusive of Maori?, was, on September 30ih, 764,181, the Maoris being 39,851. A lad named J. Lowe was knocked down on Friday, opposite Mr. J. Abbott's shop, by a horse attached to a milk cart, the wheel of which went over one of the lad's feet, and caused a temporary scare, but apparently no serious injury. We are pleased to state that Mr. H. B. Leatham'a line horse Guardsman, by Volunteer, secured two 2nd prizes at" the Bgmont A. &P. Show; one in 15st Hack Class and the other in the Best Pace Hack Class. His mare Locket was also highly commended in the Buggy Class nader 15 hands. The official returns show that the total arrivals in the colony in September were 1296 and departures 88S, as against 1337 and 1033 in the corresponding month of last night. A. G. McLellan, chief'officer of the barque Loch Trool, was fined 20s, or as an alternative seven days' imprisonment, for assaulting Walter Kobertson. A seaman, named Adam Kobertson, was similarly punished for disorderly behaviour while drank during the same altercation, Mr. W. H. Quick and Mr. H. J. H. Blow have been elected by representatives foe Wellington and country districts on the General Anglican Synod, The Chief Justice declined to.grant a change of venue in the case of Dr. Leggatt, against whom a charge of abortion is pending at Kelson. Louis Ferdinand Tegner was before the Magistrate's Court at Wellington on Thursday, charged with the theft of £B7 3s 9d, moneys of the Crown, at Hunterville on October 31st. The accused was remanded tilll the 16th, and allowed bail. The Ohairman (Mr. Rout) and MessrsHarley and Pipe, members of the Nelson Charitable Aid Board, have each been pre : sented by the citizens with a gold watch, as a mark of appreciation of their conduct relative to the Stoke Industrial School. A similar presentation was made to Mr. F. Haase, who was instrumental in- securing information j Our readers are reminded of the clearing sale to be held on account of Mr. Max Mantey, on Tuesday next, by Messrs. Vickers and Stevens, when they will sell without '■ reserve, the whole of his farm stock and household furniture. Whilst severallittle children were playing in the vicinity of the Egmont Boot Factory on Friday, an infant named Eowe was acci- ' dentally struck on the side of the head with a piece of broken earthenware, causing a minor artery to be punctured, which bled rather profusely. Dr. Leatham was sent for, and, with commendable promptitude, attended the little sitfferr. Tlio doctor skilfully dressed the . wound, and the childis now progressing satisfactorily. The local cricket teams took advantage of the holiday on Friday to play matches at Haiverj, Inglewood, Wa'tara, etc. fc'ome of the remarks made by the street eornerites on* seeing the Guards return to town, after their record march on Friday, Were more forcible than polite. About a tenth part of the journey would have Completely laid out these .blatant loafers. .The 1 concert by the Glty Band in the ' Recreation Grounds on Friday proved, not only very attractive, but a musical treat for the large assambhge. The public greatly appreciated the generous actioji of the members of the Band in providi\lJ such an acceptable opportunity for spending a portion of the holiday, ft is to bei hoped that .this good feeling will manifest itself vpractieal way at the forthcoming bazaaP?n raid of the Band's funds. The obligation should not be all on one side. Anniversary sermons will be preached in Queen-street, Primitive methodist 'Church to-morrow, Sunday, November Uth, by the Revs. Olphert and Nixon.
