Every branch of the British Army will be represented in tho detachments detailed to attend tho Commonwealth inauguration. -The weather was again wet at Wellington on Saturday, heavy rain falling in the morning. It is rather surprising to find the totaj fall for ten months in the year—44-65 inches —is slightly below the same period last year. The yearly averago for 32 years past is 50-9. During the last six months, however, the weather has been really wetter than for many years past, as the rain, though not heavy, is much more persistent, and has fallea on mere days. In tho Supremo Court, in Chambers, on the application of Mr. O. L. MacDiarmid (for Messrs, Standish k Kerr), probate of the last will and testament of Isabella Paul, late of Lepperton, deceased, was, on Saturday last, granted to Thomas Paul, the executor in the said will named. Mrs. Goldwator and the Ladies' Committee of the Fire Brigade Ball are working hard to make the annual ball a greater success than ever. A good number of children are practising the different dances, and the publio will have the opportunity of .witnessing some pretty dancing by our young folk, which should not be missed. The object is a deserving one, and the Brigade should have* bumper house. Some interesting information regarding the b.s. Ngapuhi will bo found in this issue. The Borough Council are carrying oak a much-needed improvement to Vivian-street. ; The County Council and Land Board meet to-day. The annual meeting of shareholders ef th ß Oakura Co-operative Dairy Factory is toed for this evening at 7.30 o'clock at the Oakura Hall.
Mr. J. Guerin loft New Plymouth for Eltham by tha i p.m. train on Saturday. He was farewelled at the station by a large number of friends and well-wishers. Mr. Guerin takes over the editorial control of the Eltham. -liv/us to-day, and, while regretting the loss the News has sustained, we congratulate him of his prometion to such a responsible position, and the Argus on securing his services. Mr. Guerin has filled several responsible positions on the staff of tbe News, in all of which he has shown marked ability, and we wish liim every success.
At the meeting of the High Scl'ool Board of Governors on Friday notification waa received from the Minister of Education that a subsidy for building purposes could not be granted. Votes were passed lor sports prizes, £3 for boys and £1 for girls. A vote of thanks was accorded Dr. Walker for a .lecture on "the eye." The breaking-up was ! fixed for December 20th and it was decided I to invite Sir Robert Stout, or failing him, Dr. | ll'indlay, to distribute tho prizes. I Whiteley Hall—This evening at 7.30 p.m. the Rev. G. W. Bond, of Wanganui, will deliver an address dealing with the recent utterances of Archbishop Redwood. A full attendance invited. Collection in aid of Home Mission Fund.—Advt. A Max Hunt in London.—One of the most desperate criminals in London—a notorious housebreaker—has just been captured. He was surprised, breaking into a large house in Bermondsoy, but for the moment escaped. The police were, however, in hot pursuit, and whon brought to bay the man drew a revolver, but police con-' stable Jones pluckily closed with therufSan, and with assistance eifected a capture. The constable risked his lifo and we rightly call him a hero, but how many of us, by inattention to our health, needlessly risk our lives every day!
