KORU.

(From Our Own Correspondent.) ?oe the last two or three days we have teen treated te a westernly gale, which a pinching the oattle up pretty much .nd putting back feed, but as we have tad a very mild winter we must not [rumble. Several of the farmers about here lave lost a few.head of cattle, viz., Mr. Julian, three cows just at or near alving, Mr. T. Mace, three or four, tnd Mr. P. Raill, one in calving and me in the bush. There has been greater mortality amongst the cattle ;his year than usual, and some put the sause down to too much turnip feed. I am sorry to have to chronics that Mrs. F. Raill has been ill for the past fortnight, and has had to be removed to the New Plymouth hospital for treatment. It is heped that Mrs. Raill will be soon well enough to return home. Mrs. DesForges very kindly took Mrs. Raill into New Plymouth, and Mrs. Jeffries is caring for the youngest child and the little girl. All the neighbours tender their sympathy to Mr. Raill in his trouble. The South African trouble has not passed over Koru without leaving its mark, as by the last mail from Africa | Mr. Meredith received notice of the death of his third son (Val), who died at Lndysmith on the 10th of -August, from pneumonia. Mr. and Mrs. Mere* dith and family have the sympathy of the district in their bereavement, as Val was a general favourite with all who knew him. He was only 23 years old. It is reported that Mr, G. Ijooney has sold out his farm at Kaitaki to a gentleman from Ngaire, the price, I hear, being .£6 10s per acre. It is also reported that the Co-opera-tive Dairy Factory at Oakura have purchased the water-right from Mrs. Looney for £IOO, and intend ereoting a dam, and will use a turbine as a driving power at the factory. Several other improvements are, I hear, contemplated, which, when completed, should make it one of the best appointed factories on the coast.
