The headmaster's report, read at a meeting of the Town School Committee oa Monday last, showed attendance for the past four weeks, respectively, to have been 446.2, 466, 413.9, and 477.7; average 450.9. The number at present on the rolls is 538. The exceptionally severe weather, he added, "has interfered considerably with the attendance, last Tuesday week being the lowest we have had for the last fifteen years." Mr. Leo Carri, in acknowledgment of the very liberal patronage given him in Now Plymouth, has decided for the last few days to give his complete course in " harmony" at the big reduction of two guineas only, instead of three, thus allowing those of limited means to take advantage of it. This he is enabled to do on account of the expenses being naturally smaller than at his start. This offer, however, is only open till Saturday, as the season finally closes next week.
At an informal meeting of the delegates of the Education and High School ■ Boards yesterday, it was suggested that public meetings might be necessary in connection with the Opaku Reserve question, Tho following was heard in New Plymouth:—"An' is it Ginerals ye calls em. In my opinion if it hadn't bin for auld Bobs, Kruger would 'ave bin preaching in St. Paul's Cathedral by this time."
Flags were hoisted at the Inglewood railway station and by the more demonstratively patriotic of our tradespeople when the information came to hand on Monday morning that President Kruger had practically "thrown up the sponge " by resigning office, and was a prisoner in Delagoa Bay. It is a great pity he did not take the course indicated several months ago, and thus be the means of patting a stop to the destruction of life and property. It is a trite saying, and its logic is worthy o£ general acceptation, that " those who make war should alone do the fighting." Wars would soon cease if international disputes, wore settled on those lines.— Record.
Wc have received word from Mr. W. Symes, M.H.8., to the effect that the plans of the new and separate pust-oilieo for Inglewood are just completed and sent lo the Postal Department, so lie supposed it was only a question of a few days when tenders would be called. It is hoped that such is Ihe case, as the building was provided for last year by the Gjvorument, and, in keeping with the giowing r.quiren.enls of Inglewood aud district, should have been nil fait accompli months ago.— Record. A Path una Incident occurred in the Lo.idon streets the other night. It was late, and a poor little girl was trying in vain to sell her violets. Suddenly a boy, atypical London arub, who had just sold his last evening paper, and was rattling his ha'pence in his pocket, stopped before her. Taking the situation in at a glance, he said kindly, " I'll buy yer vi'lets. Come on, we'll sell 'cm tergethcr." The boy evidently was a good salesman, for we passed barely an hour Inter, and the children were running about together, with only two or three bunches loft. Wc can all help one another if we like. he sick and sultering we can save if we only point out to tliein the healing virtues of Holioway's Pills and Ointment.—Advt,
If a vote were taken qn the question of the best all-round football player in the district there would be a great diversity of opinion. There are so many good men to select from, and there would, consequently, be a big run for first place. Now, if a vote wore taken as to the best remedy for coughs, colds, chills, &c., we are certain that there would be one choice with the public, and that would be Sykes' Cura Cough. All Chemists and Storekeepers.—Advt.
