NEW ZEALAND CONTINGENT.
RETURNED INVALIDS. McDOWALL'S MARVELLOUS ESCAPE. Auckland, September 13. The following returned by the Whakatane: - Corporal S. C. McDowall, of Roberts's Horse; Sullivan, sth Contingent, Wellington, trumpeter ; H. Bell, 2nd Contingent, Wanganui; A. T. Kibney, Hotchkiss Battery; A, Marton and G. Currie, 4th Contingent, Waiuku; D. W. Prosser, Ist Contingent, Leeston; C. Yon Blaramberg, 3rd Contingent, Wanganui; R. M. Thompson, 4th Contingent, Taieri; and Lance-Corporal F. Golder, 3rd Contingent, Wanganui. They were met at the wharf by Colonel Banks, and an official reception was given them at the City Council] office, where speeches were made. j McDowall was shot right through j the head at Thabanchu, a Mauser bullet entering behind one ear andi passing out on the other side. As he lay wounded a pompom shell exploded near by and buried him with earth, under which he.lay unconscious for five and a-half hours.
Al! the men appear to be well on the way to recovery. There was a large attendance of the public, and the men were given a hearty reception.
WELCOME TO RETURNED TROOPERS. Auckland, September 13. The returned troopers by the Wakaiane were accorded a military welcome. In the evening the whole of the Auckland garrison paraded, and headed by she Garrison Band, escorted the invalids to the Drill Hall, where Lieut.iJolonel Banks, commanding the district, welcomed them on behalf of the Minister of Defence, and the Commandant of the Forces, while Lieut.Jolonel White extended them a wel•ome on behalf of the volunteers. The iroopers were then escorted to the Opera House to which they had been invited to hear the Corrick Family entertainment. A great crowd witnessed the parade.
CASUALTIES. (Received 14,1.16 a.m.) London, September 13. New Zealanders, McCanavan dangerjusly wounded at the Malopo engagement, Robert B. Lear, severely wounded, H. Atkinson dangerously, Francis J. Taylor slightly wounded. Wellington, September 13,
Sir A. Milner cables the Premier, under date September 11th, the following casualties among New Zealanders 'at Nauwpoort:—Dangerously wounded, Lance-Corporal Oanavan (Auckland); severely wounded, Troopers A. J. Roberts and E. Lear (Otago); slightly [wounded, H. S. Atkinson (Auckland), |J. Dungey and M. T. Francis (Otago), J. M. Taylor (Southland).
| The Premier of Victoria wired last night that Troopers Mitchell, Norris, and Wright, of New Zealand, arrived by the Wilcannia. Mitchell belongs to the First Contingent, and comes from Balclutha. Norris is probably Morris, of Waikuku. There are several Wiights.
