A BRITISH OFFIOER MURDERED KRUGER LOOKING OUT FOR A HOME. Received 17, 9.30 a.m. London, August 16. Lord Roberts reports that the Boers have murdered Colonel 0. H. Helyar, of the Imperial Yeomanry. Two men were arrested on suspicion and will be tried by Court-martial. President Kruger is sounding the American Government as to whether the American Consul at Delagoa Bay will ticcord him a sanctuary. The Evening News says the treatment of the colonial contingents in South Africa needs the severest investigation. The cation will implacably resent any shadow of injustice or unnecessary hardship on these splendil troops.

THE BRITISH LOSSES TO DATE. Wellington, August 17. The Agent-General has cabled to the Premier, under yesterday's date, as follows:—" The British casualties in South Africa up to date total:—Deaths from all sources—including 150 inva-i lided men, about 9300 prisoners nowj in the hands of the enemy, and 2850 invalided home—about 28,000. There are probably from 6000 to 7000 sick unci wounded in the hospitals in South Africa. The money market is gradually improving owing to the. brighter outlook in China."

A notice appears in the Gazelle Mat-; ing that a proclamation was made by the Queen on December 27th warning persons against aiding the South African Dutch Republic in hostilities and against trading with them, and there being reason to believe that some terms j of this proclamation have been, or may be, infringed in New Zealand, the Governor again draws special attention to the proclamation, which is of general application to British'subjects ' all the world over, and also to foreigners resident in any part of the Queen's dominion.
