THE STOKE INDUSTRIAL SCHOOL.
[PBB PBBSS ASSOCIATION.] Nelson, August 11,
At the Stoke School Commission, on resuming this morning, Brothers Lcelus and Wibertus were in attendance, having been summoned from Wellington hy the Commissioners. Mr. Fel l , on bahalf of the management, put in a letter written by Lin?, a witness against the management, in June last, to Brother Lccius, which was most cordial in tone, asking that a situation in the Orphanage be given him, concluding with these words : —" I remain your loving friend. Good-bye. May God bless you."
The Commission called for William Ross, wbe the night previous handed the Commissioners a written statement insinuating criminal charges. Ross did not appear, another witness stating that Ross said he would not come unless sent for. Mr. Wardell said Ross was liable to punishment. A boy named Lynch, fourteen years, a present inmate, was then called by j the Commissioners, he apparently being the boy indicated in some way by Ross Lynch, in reply to the Commissioners, said that he was put up by three boys he named to tell Father George Mahoney, chaplain of the school, that one of the brothers was guilty of improper conduct. He told Father Mahoney this afterwards. Ha told him it was a lie.
Clc sely pressed by the Commissioners and Mr. Hogben, he adhered to the statement that what he told Father Mahoney in the first instance was a lie, and there was no truth in the charges. ' Father Gtorge Mahoney explained how the statement came to be made by Lynch to him and Lynch's subsequent acknowledgment t tbat he had told a lie. Brother Wibertus, the brother indicated, defied any truth whatever in the insinuation.
Mr. Bush declared the enquiry closed.
The Commission have to report by the 19th insfc.
