At the moment when the fatal shots ' were fired the crowds were cheering His Majesty, Borne was quiet at midnight, few people being then acquainted with the news. THE KING'S LAST WOBDS. WORLD-WIDE SYMPATHY. (Received 1, 2 a.m.) Rome, July 31. The tragedy occurred at Monzi at half-past ten. Sinking in his carriage, King Humbert exclaimed, "It is nothing." The carriage sped with all haste to the Royal Villa, but the King expired as he was being borne over the threshold. Queen Margherita imagined her husband was only wounded. The doctors broke the news to her. She, with tears, exclaimed," It is the greatest crime of the century. Humbert was a good and faithful man. Nobody loved the people . more truly. He bore no ill-will to anyone." The first message of condolence came bom the Pope, who celebrated Mass for the repose of the deceased King's soul. Queen Victoria and the Prince of 'Wales were inexpressibly shocked and grieved, and sent a prompt tender of i condolences. < ' Bressi, is a silk-weaver, and came i Gram Paterson, New Jersey. There is universal sorrow and amaze- . ment in Germany and keennest sympathy, and in Italy there is sincere , mourning. , The Emperor of Germany was home-ward-bound from Heligoland, and was , unaware of the tragedy. Majesty-the" King of Italy had been struck down by some foul aisassin, and that such a fine and noble life had been . sacrificed in such a manner. Would you kindly convey to the Italian residents in New Zealand my sincere sympathy for them in their present , sorrow?"
