THE HATUMA CASE.

(FEB JRBB6 ASSOCIATION.) Napier, June 27. After six dßys' hearing, the Compensation Court gave an unanimous decision in the case of the Hatuma estate, taken compulsorily under the Land for Settlements Act. The whole estate was 26,976 acres, and the Government offered £4 10s an acre, or £121,000. The ehimant (Mr. Purvis Russell) asked £238,590. The award gives tbe claimant 585 acres of the best land on the run, with the mansion and chief station buildings, and for tbe balance ef 26,391 acres £141,618, or £5 7s 4d an acre. The claimant got £3OO towards his costs. The Chief Justiee paid a high tribute to the assistance he bad received from the assessors—Mr, Donald Grant, of Rangitikei, for the Government, and Mr. Charles Elgar, of Featherstoß, for the claimant.
